Transportation Engineering:
State Park Road Widening Project (download pdf)
City of Benicia, CA

For over 20 years bicyclists and pedestrians in the City of Benicia had to cross a narrow and dangerous bridge on State Park Road over Interstate 780 to access the scenic Benicia State Recreation Area. In the summer of 2002, the City of Benicia received Transportation Development Act (TDA), Article III funding to perform a preliminary engineering analysis to widen State Park Road and its approaches in this location.
Pakpour Consulting Group, in conjunction with Berryman & Henigar and Quincy Engineering, was selected to provide preliminary and final design services for this project. The design team worked closely with the multiple stakeholders including, State Park Officials, California Department of Transportation, the Bicycle Coalition, and residents in the area to prepare a conceptual design that would be functional, safe and aesthetically pleasing to the community. The preliminary design report submitted to Caltrans for approval detailed the scope of the project which included the addition of a Caltrans Class I Bicycle Path along the westerly span and approaches of the State Park Road over-crossing on I-780.
Once the preliminary design report is approved by Caltrans, Pakpour Consulting Group will prepare the final plans, specifications and cost estimate for a 16-foot wide bicycle and pedestrian bridge and a 12-foot wide bicycle path adjacent to the existing edge of pavement, and a concrete barrier which separates the bicycle path from the traffic lane. Upon completion, the new Bicycle-Pedestrian path will provide safe access to and from the Benicia State Recreation Area from the residential areas to the north as part of the City’s bike path system.
